Web Awareness for Teachers

Girl at a computerFor many Canadian school children, the Internet is a fact of life in the classroom, so it's important for teachers to understand the tremendous opportunities this medium offers – as well as the issues and challenges it presents. The resources in this section have been created to help teachers provide students with the skills they need to evaluate online information, understand online marketing, and protect privacy and personal safety as they surf the Net.

What are kids doing online? Safe Passage looks at the benefits and the risks associated with young people's Internet use and offers teachers background information and resources to ensure that the online experiences of their students are safe, educational and positive.

When it comes to reaching young people, the Internet is a marketer's dream. Kids for Sale includes background information about online marketing and data collection on commercial sites for kids and teens and provides teachers with resources to help kids understand the "business" side of the Net and to safeguard their personal information on commercial sites.

How do kids know what's true and what's not on the Internet? Fact or Folly offers information and strategies to help young people determine the credibility of Web sites and separate fact from opinion on the Net.

Media Awareness Network offers educators a range of resources to help young people become safe, wise and responsible Internet users. These professional development and in-class resources examine Internet safety and privacy, cyber-marketing, ethical online behaviour and the authentication of online information.
