With funding from the Canadian Studies Program of Canadian Heritage, the Media Awareness Network conducted research in 1998 to determine the status of media education across Canada. Our objective was to identify which subject areas contained media education outcomes in the new curricula and to determine what support was available to help teachers integrate media-related components into their lessons. Over the winter of 2002, MNet revisited curricular outcomes for media education and Web literacy in English Language Arts and Information Technology curricula across the country.
The verdict? Canada has come a long way in giving official recognition to media literacy, but there is still a long way to go before the subject is integrated fully into Canadian classrooms.
Media Literacy in Canada provides a "snapshot" of our findings and an analysis by province and territory of where media education is at, what provincial, territorial and national organizations are making it happen, and how teachers can find resources that satisfy curricular media education outcomes.
PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL OVERVIEWS AND MEDIA EDUCATION OUTCOMES
Media education initiatives vary across Canada. This section provides detailed information on the status of media education for each province and territory, information on provincial/territorial media education organizations, and a listing of media education curricular outcomes, by grade, with links to supporting MNet resources.
Includes curriculum reform in Canada, the present status of media education and the continuing challenges that must be addressed before media education can be effectively integrated into the majority of Canadian classrooms.
