Filtering Tools: An Introduction
A vast array of tools is available to control where children go online, and what they do. This section looks at some options for your home computer, and also some server-based tools.
Before we look at these tools, though, it's important to understand their limitations. Filters and blockers have their advantages, as we'll see - but there are also disadvantages to relying on technology to protect children. Filters can block a lot of useful information and often fail to block inappropriate content.
When children are still young, filtering tools may be useful to complement - not replace - parental supervision and involvement. But as kids grow older, they should learn responsible online behaviour - rather than being kept in a protective "bubble." What kids need to learn is good judgment and critical thinking to apply to their use of the Internet.
Having said that, the options available are computer-based tools and server-based tools.
