 PARENTS TIPS: TELEVISION

The Question: Do you have tips for managing TV viewing with young children?

My 10 year old, is not allowed to watch TV until he has done his homework, and a few responsibilities around the house, (tidy his room, take a shower, and take the trash out), then he is allowed watching TV. The faster he completes his responsibilities, the faster he can watch his favourite programs. I always monitor what he watches, and TV must be off an hour before going to bed. If rules are broken, either he is not allowed to watch TV, or he must turn off the TV an hour earlier than normal the following day.

As parents we must control the amount of time spent in front of screens to maintain a balance. We must be creative, and reinvent the wheel so to speak...invite the children to tactile challenges and pastimes. Take them out into the real world (not the shopping mall) and visit parks, museums, galleries and concerts. Go bike riding, rollerblading, swimming etc. the list goes on. There is hope if you watch and listen to your children, you will find out what will spark their interest in the real world.

I found with the TV that "out of sight, out of mind" works really well. Once we removed our television from the living room and put it upstairs in our spare bedroom the kids forgot it existed. Now we only watch it when there is something good on we've decided to watch together.
