I talk regularly to my kids about the negative ways in which women are often portrayed in music videos. Why do they use sex to sell their music (think of Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera!).

We compare the images of male artists with those of females. When looking at music videos I ask them "Why are women artists so sexualized compared the men." "Is there a double standard for female artists when it comes to their appearence? Do they have to be attractive to be sucessful?"

I like to buy music by artists who are good role models for my daughter (she's 10). A lot of the singers we like are also Canadian like Nelly Furtado and Avril Lavigne -which is a bonus!
