In British Columbia, the responsibility for in-service training and professional development for teachers is shared by school boards, local teaching associations, the British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) and the College of Teachers. Funding for implementation is provided annually by the Ministry of Education.
In the past year, media education workshops have been conducted in a few school boards, while other boards have included a media education component in their English Language Arts professional development sessions.
Partnerships with businesses are also providing professional development opportunities. In the summer of 2002, the British Columbia Association for Media Education (BCAME) partnered with CHUM Television to provide two one-week training sessions on media literacy for media literacy teachers and teacher librarians.
The British Columbia Teachers of English Language Arts (BCTELA) group has carried a regular media education column in its journal, Update and includes media education sessions in its annual conference.
The Education Director of Pacific Cinematheque has been actively promoting media education, creating film study guides, delivering workshops across the lower mainland and linking the content of these workshops to the BC English Language Arts curriculum.
