Media Literacy Saskatchewan (MLS) became an official special subject council of the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation in 1991. At that time, the MLS had 45 members and published a quarterly newsletter called MediaView.
MLS members developed three media literacy programs for use in the schools - Telemedia, Newsmedia and Kindermedia. They also created a unit of study in Film and Literature for the senior English curriculum and a Grades K-12 Media Literacy Resource Guide.
Unfortunately, in the late 1990s membership dropped drastically and in 1999 MLS was disbanded. However, this does not mean that media educators are without a voice. The remaining budget for MLS was allocated to the association for Saskatchewan Teachers of English and Language Arts (STELA), which is a specialist council that includes many media educators in its membership. As part of its commitment to media education, STELA has designated a provincial representative to the Canadian Association of Media Education Organizations (CAMEO).
